How the Locals Care program works

Community Card image

Cardholders present their Locals Care Community Cards or participating bank credit or debit card when they purchase goods and services at participating Locals Care businesses and earn Community Points, rewards points, with every qualifying Locals Care purchase.

The card is electronically encoded to distribute merchant gift donations to the participating nonprofit organization that they selected when they registered the card.

Community Cards will be available in Los Alamos in 2008.

In addition, Los Alamos National Bank has encoded their customers’existing Visa® Gold credit and debit cards as Locals Care Community Cards. LANB is also offering a new Locals Care–branded Visa® Gold card. All of these cards may be used as Locals Care cards and will automatically generate rewards and donations with one swipe of the card in the merchant credit card machine.

The Locals Care businesses agree to commit a percentage of every qualifying transaction, usually 4%, to the Locals Care program.

Cardholders redeem their Community Points to purchase qualifying goods and services at any Locals Care business. Every 1000 points automatically converts to a $10 credit to the cardholder, redeemable on purchases only at Locals Care merchants.

For example, a $100 purchase, with a 4% merchant contribution, would generate 400 community points or a $4.00 distribution as follows:

$2.00 merchandise credit to cardholder
$1.60 to the nonprofit organization you select
$0.40 to the Community Fund
